Assignment 2 - Monday 15th December
A reminder of the class assignment (20%) on Monday - summary/response.
We have been prepraring for this in class - most of which is based around unit 1 in the coursebook.
There will be a cartoon (choice from 2) to summarise and respond to
and an article to summarise and respond to.
I will also be giving you the next assignment to do over the holidays. You will then have a second go at this in class in January.
Debating topics will be suggested in the blog. Given the recent controversy on assisted suicide in both Britain and Portugal, this may be a choice. Let's see what you think on Wednesday 17th.

Compulsory sex education for primary schoolsGovernment review likely to say children must learn about human body and relationships.
• Press Association
• guardian.co.uk, Thursday October 23 2008 09.52 BST
Primary school children in England should be given basic sex education lessons, a government review is expected to conclude today.
It is likely to recommend a shake-up of lessons to combat concerns that current teaching of the subject is too patchy.
The schools minister, Jim Knight, who has been leading the review, is due to present its findings today, as well as the government's responses.
The review is expected to say that sex education should be compulsory in all schools.
This could include teaching young children the basics about the human body and relationships, with more detailed information being given as a child moves up through school.
Such moves are likely to be opposed by family campaigners and some critics argue that sex education in primary schools risks sexualising children at a younger age.
Last week, Knight told MPs he had received "strong recommendations" for making sex education compulsory in all schools. But he said it had to be done without "sexualising young people too early".
International evidence suggests that certain aspects of sex and relationship education taught before puberty has a "positive effect" on issues such as teenage pregnancy, Knight said.
Britain currently has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe, and figures suggest that rising numbers of young people are being diagnosed with sexually transmitted diseases.
Schoolchildren must currently be taught the biological facts of reproduction, which usually happens in science classes. Every school must have a sex education policy, but there is no statutory requirement for teaching about relationships, and the social and emotional side of sexual behaviour.
Campaign group the Family Education Trust argues there is no evidence that teenage pregnancy rates are reduced by starting sex education at an early age.
The government is also due to publish a second review on drugs education in schools today. It is expected to say that effective drug and alcohol education should be an entitlement for all children, and suggest that parents should be better informed.
A spokesman for Life Education, a children's health education charity said: "If we want to make a real and lasting difference to teenage drug and alcohol misuse, we must reach them early - at primary school.

Fruity Jigsaw
Hello everyone!!
Following Allyson's suggestion, I scribbled a 'poem' about a fruit - my favourite fruit. It's here and on Coffee Philosophies' blog. :)
Try to guess what fruit it is!
The Scottish woods crafted you beyond the secrets of spring
Tiny crimson pearl, earrings of the bushes
Bittersweet jewels growing out of the May’s dew
Pulpy enchanted berry bleeding acid sugar in my tongue
As my teeth get rosier with the intense juice
Dancing in my wide cerise smile
My lips lit with tiny droplets, tiny surprises that shine
A treasure of the woods, merry to find!
Lots of sunshine! :D

write an ode to an orange - for fun :-)

Oh orange, grown and nurtured pesticide free
organic you were destined to be
I saw your healthy glow from afar
and selected you especially for the beauty that you are
Brought you home and began the wait
Anticipation grew as I considered your fate
Then the time finally came
your deliciousness for me to claim
Oh no! You are gone. I call your name!
It is Stan that I blame

YOUR WRITER’S NOTEBOOK
Imagine! You have a photograph of a moment, a person, a setting: it captures time. So does your writing.
Each time you put thoughts to paper you are crafting ideas and crafting language to shape your ideas.
Each time your write you rework, reshape and redefine your ideas and language.
Keep a writer’s notebook this semester. Use it to record the various stages to producing a final piece of writing for an assignment. Your writing will grow like a tree – an idea will take root, branching out until you have a finished work; from a seed to fruition.
How?
1. In class you will be asked to write a number of initial drafts. You can come back to these later in assignments. Put these in your notebook.
2. Post your initial drafts in your small group blogs – remember these are initial drafts. Share ideas how the work can be improved.
3. Adapt and change your piece of writing as ideas come from class or from other sources.
4. Submit your final version, and post this again in your small group blog.

Saying hello

“The door to success is marked ‘Push’ and ‘Pull’.” Proverb
Congratulations on taking off into the 2nd year and welcome to the group.
I had a wonderful summer, which included roaming the north of Portugal in the National Park of Gerez, horse riding into Spain, and clambering up rocks and vallies with the dogs. Then wild camping on an island in the Rio Zezere. I learned of a new concept for travellers: Couch surfing. The objective is a better world through making connections between travellers and the communities they pass through. Do check the link and see what you think!
I went wolf watching but did not see any, and considered the controversy of their integration and acceptance into the wild! I have got into reading a specific genre of writing which seems to inspire my writing and travels, and so read in that direction this summer.
I read less than I hoped. My hit this year is "The Wild Places" by Robert Macfarlane. This is an interesting genre of writing - traveller meets place and interacts - not observes. Hug a tree?
To get the ball rolling, the cameras clicking and the creative spirit glowing, let the group know you have arrived by telling us where you have been this summer - the highlights of these last few months. Post a reply.
Looking forward to your being here.
Allyson
